Diana Loper. "It only takes a minute to destroy a brain. At 24, Diana Loper was given electroshock for post-partum depression and an inability to sleep after the birth of her child. After 24 treatments, she was released in a far worse condition, and could no longer care for herself or her family . As a result, her husband divorced her and her child was taken away by the courts. This is her story: "My story is many stories. There are thousands. Over a hundred thousand persons per year receive ECT I don't even like to use the term therapy--this is only a procedure. "I had a premature child, post-partum depression, and sleep deprivation. The post-partum depression is, of course, what we call the baby blues, and the sleep deprivation was from having a very sick child. I was married to a preacher and we decided to go to a psychiatrist to talk about what was going on with me. This psychiatrist decided that I needed shock treatments. "I didn't go for everything they said but my husband did. The psychiatrist told my husband, 'Well, you know, she's very depressed, and all we have to do is put her to sleep. There will be a little bit of a jolt through her body, and she'll have a little convulsion. It will be like going to sleep. And then she'll wake up the next day and everything will be fine. This clip is an interesting explanation of why psychiatrists have apparently been unaware for 70 years that ECT can and does cause profound memory loss and cognitive damage. The reason? Because until a few years ago, the only persons who complained of severe memory loss also said it didn't help them. It took finding some patients who experienced devastating memory loss who would also proclaim it "saved their life" before Harold Sackeim would listen. Hey, I'm not the one who said it...Harold is. He's the champion of the shock patient, at least in his own head. Maybe he needs to revisit the early years of Sackeimology, when his research revolved around self deception, the lies we tell ourselves. Harold (call him doctor, damn you!) relates an interesting story, if true. He's been known to make up statistics and a vignette or two. And he questioned whether or not the individuals on ect.org were really ECT patients. That's called projection, Harold. Or deflection. You should have learned these terms when you studied Sackeimology. The story takes place at an ECT donut course. (Shock docs and donuts are like cops and donuts.) One of the "very famous people" (that could really only be Abrams, Fink or Kellner, probably the Finkster) announced that profound memory loss just doesn't happen. But our hero Harold asked the audience - all shock docs - if they'd encountered it. Two-thirds raised their hands. Oops. 70 years of denial down the drain. It was almost a watershed moment, he ... |

www.medhelp.org Track your mood, symptoms, treatments and keep a journal. Also had community and expert forums for Bipolar Disorder & a multitude of other health issues. My memory has been affected by things such as past ECT treatments, medications (Topomax caused problems with word finding especially), and the bipolar disorder itself. I am especially forgetful when I am depressed. My mind sometimes goes completely blank, and I catch myself staring off into space. I have to take a moment and look around to figure out what it was exactly that I was in the middle of doing--toothbrush in my hand, oh, I was brushing my teeth. Disorganized thoughts tend to be a manic problem. Sometimes I just cannot put my thoughts into any order that seems helpful to me or, sometimes, my thoughts are going so fast that I can only catch one here and one there at random. Sometimes during mania there are so many thoughts vying for my attention that I just give up. In a normal mood, I'm pretty good at keeping organized, but I sitll rely on the little tricks I have developed over the years. This is what works for me. You will work out your own systems, but maybe I have shown some ideas that might be of some use to you. Do you have any hints for the rest of us? Let us know in the comments section. |

"Going into a psychiatric ward is a very dangerous place to be - Why? Because psychiatrists can label you with bogus mental disorders from the DSM IV book called the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. There is no scientific proof nor test that proves that mental illness exists. Sue went through all of the following except for the 4 point restraints and the CTOs: Because psychiatrists can give you psychiatric drugs some of which can cause brain damage. Then they want to see you once a month for life in the out patient department. Because you can be put in a 4 point restraints, leather straps put on both your wrists and legs and the staff tie you to the bed. I saw someone in a hospital, one of roommates who had the 4 point restraints, I untied her. This is barbaric and still goes on Because some psychiatrists may tell you not to have children because you'll pass on your so called bogus mental diorder to your children. Don't believe this at all because it is not true. Because psychiatrists can order for you to get a chemical restraint which is a needle given you in your hip. If you resist getting this needle, orderlies willbe called and come by and you will be forcibly injected with a needle of sedatives from a nurse which can knock you out for hours. Because psychiatrists can order you to take psychiatric drugs out in the community once you are released from the hospital. In Ontario, Canada, it is called CTOs which means Community Treatment Orders. The ... |
