How Good Really Is Kombucha Tea?
A lot of Hollywood stars such as Reese Witherspoon have enjoyed the benefits of this wonderful beverage. So a lot of people can have the chance to buy, an entire shelf in a popular supermarket is filled with this product. How really is kombucha tea prepared, what are the ingredients used, and where did this come from? And more important to ask is, is it really as good as zealots claim it to be?
Kombucha tea is a beverage made from the fermentation of black or green tea with a culture that forms the kombucha mushroom. After the fermentation process, the sac that is formed has the same color and shape of a mushroom which is where the name is derived. You can find many micoorganisms in kombucha mushroom and this can include Torula species, Bacterium xylinoides, Schizosaccharomyces pombe, Brettanomyces bruxellensis, Pichia fermentans, Saccharromycodes ludwigii, Bacterium xylinum, Bacterium gluconicum and many more. The finished product usually is acidic with 0.5-1.5% alcohol content where sugar and yeast are then added to get the desired taste, odor and color.
Although the kombucha tea has only been introduced in the market a few years back, there are a lot of people who claim that this product has already been enjoyed by the people of Qin Dynasty (although there is no evidence yet for this claim). In his literature entitled “Kombucha, The Miracle Fungus”, author Harald W. Tietzesaid that the Chinese in the Qin Dynasty regarded the beverage, famously known as the “Godly Tsche (or Tea)”, with magical powers enabling people to live forever.
Therefore, if above claim is to be believed, then the kombucha mushroom tea may just have the potential to earn the moniker “elixir of life”. Patronisers of this product claim that drinking tea can improve overall health status and can even cure illnesses such as chronic fatigue syndrome, insomnia, baldness, intestinal problems and even arthritis. And it also have a cancer-preventive agent called glucaric acid. It is also said to be the cure for HIV.
Do you find it hard to believe? I guess so. However, there is no scientific evidence that indeed it has amazing properties as what the endorsers of this product say. Instead, there have a lot of infections and deaths that put their blame on the practice of drinking kombucha tea. A lot of contamination can happen and can be a danger to one’s health if brewing is actually done at home. Drinking unsafe products can lead to serious health problems and sometimes even death especially products that are not well-prepared.
