All About Civilization V
By Zen Li-Civilization 5 guide REVIEW
The upcoming strategy game by Sid Meier and Firaxis, Civilization V, is wrapping a lot of chatter before its September 2010 release date. The new Civilization, Civ, will be complete overhauled from what you are used to playing in the previous series. Unlike Civ 4, Civ 5 is operated on a game of hexes instead of squares, and the stack up problem is erased with the new rule of only one unit per hex. Your terrain, borders and weather are much more realistic and can now influence the way your combats turn out. In previous games your units would die off if you lost a combat. Now, a unit can survive and can even be upgraded to veteran status. If you are not familiar with the Civilization series, you can play some demos and online games to get addicted like the rest of us.
In Civ 5 the civilization leaders will even speak their native language. This just adds to the many other features that are making this game more and more realistic. Then AI, artificial Intelligence, in the game is superb as well. Leaders have their own distinct personalities that are determined by your “flavours”. This makes playing with the historical leaders much more realistic and believable. Some famous leaders you can plan to encounter are; Augustus Caesar, Queen Elizabeth, George Washington, Hiawatha and even Ramesses II from Egypt. Each unit has unique abilities, building capabilities, and some units have optional second or third units.
Other than the hexes, the most notable addition is the removal of the religion system and the addition of city-states. City-states are basically neutral and weak cities that are not there to compete with your units and in fact do cannot go outside their own city. However, these city-states can be conquered or allied with for more combat bonuses. If you do choose to form an alliance rather than conquer a city-state know that a city-state can only form an alliance with one major leader at a time. They can also request that your unit perform a certain task like attack another city or even clear out the local barbarians. Technology trees are unique to each city-state as well as unique personalities. When you have both of these traits on a city-state it makes for different outcomes if you form an alliance with them.
Civilization V is said to be released to North American on September 21, 2010 and on September 24, 2010 internationally. If you are running the Civ series on a Mac, you may have to wait a bit longer. Firaxis representatives have not set a release date for this system but did say there would be a Civ 5 for the Macs eventually. You can visit the official Civ website for screenshots and promo trailers on Civ 5, as well as play a demo version of Civ 4! All of the Civ games are available for purchase and download right from the website. Civilization lets you experience a whole new world of PC gaming.
