Simple Methods To Improve Your Memory And Remember What Ever You Want
Trying to improve your memory? If not you ought to be. There are countless advantages of being able to quickly recall, facts, figures, names, faces, dates and crucially where you left your keys. I had to get my brain in shape to remember the endless stream of Great Gatsby Quotes I needed for my literature exams. Don’t worry its not difficult, just a few simple guidelines will have your brain tuned up and ready to go.
Okay, we’ll start off with a bit about how memory works. Remembering something is the same as learning it like you did in school. You will of heard hopefully of the three styles of learning, visual, auditory and kinaesthetic or in laymen’s terms; reading, listening and doing (writing, mind-mapping or making and ordering cue cards.) While nobody can agree on the exact figures it is pretty obvious that you will remember a fraction of the information if you just use one method, slightly more if you use two and most of it if you combine all three.
When you think about it that is a pretty obvious conclusion and you wonder why a load of scientists bothered doing all that research but never mind. Hopefully it is equally obvious how to implement this. If your reading a newspaper (visual), read out loud (Audio) and write down all the most important bits on a bit of paper (kinaesthetic). If your listening to an audio book or radio show (Audio) then take notes and doodle (kinaesthetic) then read them back afterwards (Visual).
Another basic memory fact is that you remember events that make you emotional as it activates more parts of the brain. Do you remember where you were for your first kiss, or when the sports team you support one a big game or when JFK got shot ( I wasn’t conceived then but people always seem to use this example.) That’s because these events had a lot of emotion attached to them for most people, do you remember what happened the next night, probably not because it wasn’t so emotional. Think of it as your brains way of deleting all the boring bits to save space for what matters.
So how can we take advantage of this. It is easy really, just try and add emotion to things you want to remember, or at least make them more stimulating. Adding colour to anything you write helps, so does drawing little doodles, the sillier the better because if they make you laugh, your more likely to remember them. If your reading something aloud, do it in a silly voice, try and practice your Mexican accent or your (insert famous person here) impression. If your reading an important passage try changing around some of the words to make it amusing. Here’s a great example:
“Harry took the wang. He felt a sudden warmth in his fingers. He raised the wang above his head, brought it swishing down through the dusty air and a stream of red and gold sparks shot from the end like a firework, throwing dancing spots of light on to the walls”
just by changing wand to wang they have created something that, although rather childish, will stick easily in your mind. You really can have a lot of fun with this technique.
If you can master all these techniques and make them habit then you will remember much more of your day to day life and even better memory is like a muscle. The more you use it the stronger it becomes, and as you improve your memory in one area you will see improvements in all areas like remembering names or directions (or Great Gatsby Quotes.)
